A book titled “Nadayogi – Dr Rajkumar,” based on the life and musical journey of Dr Rajkumar, will be released on Thursday, May 7, 2026, in Bengaluru.
Dr Rajkumar (S. P. Muthuraju), a noted Kannada film actor and singer, is recognised for his contributions to Indian cinema. In a rare distinction, he received National Awards in both acting and singing, making him the only artist to achieve this in Indian film history. His work has also been associated with representing Indian culture.
While his command over Carnatic classical music is widely acknowledged, his interest and practice in Hindustani classical music added another dimension to his musical abilities. His background in theatre reflects the influence of the rich musical traditions of earlier professional drama companies.
The book “Nadayogi – Dr Rajkumar” is a compilation of conversations with the actor and includes interviews with his wife Parvathamma Rajkumar. It also highlights the role of his brother S. P. Varadaraju, who is presented as a guiding influence in shaping his personality. The book further documents his interests across art, literature and culture, including both Indian classical and Western instrumental music, along with rare and spontaneous conversations.
The work has been authored by R. Manjunath Chavan and Dr Soumya Manjunath Chavan, who have had a long-standing association with the Rajkumar family. Through these interactions, the narrative presents insights into his personal and artistic life, beyond his public image.
The release event will take place at Dr Rajkumar Bhavan, Karnataka Film Artists Association, located on Pampa Mahakavi Road in Chamarajapete, between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Guests attending the event include Lakshmi Govindaraj, Poornima Ramkumar, music personalities Manohar Naidu and Lahari Velu, and actor and producer Rockline Venkatesh.
The book is published by Total Kannada Publications, Jayanagar. The event will be hosted by Hariharapra Manjunath. A musical rendition of Rajkumar songs by Dr Suhas is scheduled before the formal start of the programme, followed by evening refreshments. Organisers have invited the public to attend the event.
