Indu Enage Govinda brings the extraordinary life of Padma Shri and Vidyavachaspati Bannanje Govindacharya, one of Karnataka’s most respected scholars and exponents of Madhva philosophy, to the big screen.
Produced by Bannanje Govindacharya Pratishthana, Bengaluru, and directed by Karthik Saraguru, the film traces his journey from a curious child to journalist, researcher, thinker, orator and renowned scholar. Veena Bannanje and Vijaya Simhachar have undertaken the research and life story, with cinematography by B.R. Vishwanath and music by Praveen D. Rao.
Bhaskar Rao portrays the elderly Govindacharya, while Krishnaraj Kutpadi plays his younger years. The film was shot around Udupi, Ambalpady and Manipal, recreating the cultural landscape that shaped his early life.
More than a conventional biopic, the film explores Govindacharya’s inquisitive mind, intellectual struggles, brief phase of atheism, relentless research and deep spiritual journey. It highlights his belief that traditions must be understood before they are practised, and his opposition to superstition and blind belief.
The film also portrays significant episodes from his life, including the loss and eventual recovery of the original palm-leaf manuscript of the Sarvamoola text, an experience marked by anguish, allegations and what he regarded as his Guru’s grace.
At the heart of his journey remained his unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna. The film captures this spiritual connection through evocative sequences, including Krishna appearing to young Govinda.
Spanning approximately two and a half hours, Indu Enage Govinda covers his association with the Ashta Mathas, relationships with pontiffs, support for scholars, Sanskrit teaching, interpretations of Puranas and ancient texts, journalism and family life.
Ultimately, the film seeks to portray not just the life of Bannanje Govindacharya, but the mind behind the scholar, the seeker behind the knowledge and the devotee behind the philosopher. Special screenings are expected to be organized across Karnataka for his admirers and followers.
