The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has decided to withhold permission for the release of Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka unless the actor issues a public apology for his recent controversial remark. During the film’s pre-release event in Chennai, Kamal Haasan reportedly stated that the Kannada language originated from Tamil, triggering widespread criticism across Karnataka.

The event also saw Kannada actor Shivarajkumar in attendance as a chief guest. Following the statement, several Kannada organisations and political leaders condemned Kamal Haasan’s comments, calling them disrespectful to the Kannada language and its heritage.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded by saying that Kannada has a long history and that Kamal Haasan may not be fully informed about it. BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra criticised the statement, saying that glorifying Tamil by insulting Kannada reflected “arrogance and extreme insolence.”

Karnataka Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi also reacted strongly, stating that “those who insult Kannada have no place in our state.” He added that if Kamal Haasan fails to apologise, action will be taken to ban the release of Thug Life in Karnataka. Tangadagi had also written to the KFCC urging them not to allow the film’s release unless an apology is issued.

Despite the pressure, Kamal Haasan maintained his position, stating, “I have only repeated what historians have said. I have not spread any false information. I’ve said nothing that requires an apology. The word ‘sorry’ does not come in love.”

Following his refusal to apologise, pro-Kannada activists staged a protest outside the KFCC office on Thursday, demanding that the film not be released in the state.

After holding a meeting, KFCC president N.M. Narasimhulu confirmed that many Kannada organisations have opposed Kamal Haasan’s remarks. “We are trying to make him understand and apologise. If he fails to do so, Thug Life will not be allowed to release in Karnataka,” he said.

Meanwhile, advance booking for Thug Life has opened in other states, but remains on hold in Karnataka due to the ongoing controversy.
