The versatile Upendra is set to join the cast of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth’s film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.

Actor-director Upendra will play a significant role in the film, where he will appear as the antagonist. A poster welcoming him to the team has been circulating on social media.

Nagarjuna was originally considered for the role but has declined the offer, leading to Upendra stepping in. Currently, Upendra is also busy with UI, which is scheduled for release in October. Previously, Shivarajkumar had a notable role in Rajinikanth’s Jailer, and now Upendra is set to be part of Rajinikanth’s next project.

Rajinikanth was last seen in his daughter Aishwarya’s directorial Lal Salaam, which was released earlier this year. The superstar is eagerly anticipating the release of T.J. Gnanavel’s directorial Vettaiyan, where he will share screen space with Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, and others.

Coolie is being produced by Kalanithi Maran under the banner of Sun Pictures, which also produced Rajinikanth’s Jailer. Anirudh Ravichander is the music composer for the film.

Recently, Kannada superstars who have ventured into other languages and received negative feedback from fans in those languages have faced backlash. For example, Dhuniya Vijay, who took on a role in a Balakrishna film, decided not to take on similar roles in the future.

Now, it’s Upendra’s turn. The senior actor, director, and producer has previously commented on how actors are regarded as heroes in their own language but may face criticism when working in other languages. Dr. Shivarajakumar has been an exception to this trend so far.
