The overdose of intelligence by director Madhuchandra leads to a protracted narration. There was a possibility to prune such a lengthy narration. That is the only drawback of this film – minus 20 minutes, the film Mr Rani becomes a fully loaded entertainer.
There is some fine performance from Deepak Subramanya. From television serials to cinema, Deepak has made a very tough character look easy. His portrayal of “Rani” is extremely good. He has carried very good emotions too, making this nothing less than a new platform for the already popular small-screen actor Deepak Subramanya.
After Dr. Kamal Haasan (Chachi 420) taking on a female role, quite a few have tried in the film industry, and among them, Deepak Subramanya fits in very well.
What happened to director Madhuchandra? He is such an intelligent thinker and maker, yet he has not chiseled his thoughts or pruned his narration. His overdose is the sickening part of the film. Of course, the deep concern of the director — Swarthakintha Cinema Doddadu — is appreciable. The video game placement in the film is not a proper approach.
We have a handsome Raja, an engineer. He has a strict father and a very caring mother, and a good friend too! Raja’s father wants him to settle in the USA and earn well. Raja, however, is interested in becoming an actor. His good friend Fatso Manja makes a short video of Raja in Rani makeup at one of the college functions. The fine looks of Raja as Rani become the cynosure of all eyes.
The dangerous trick by Raja’s friend, claiming that he has an appointment in the USA, creates room for piling up further dangerous situations. With the help of a good makeup artist, Raja transforms into Rani.
In a series of incidents, Rani takes over the helm of the cinema industry. Raja, alias Rani, gains affluence, respect, and an unshakable position.
Is it easy for Raja to maintain the situation? The director brings in various complications for his screenplay, which later becomes a protracted narration. Of course, there are a few good moments that make the audience reflect.
Does Raja give up his Rani position? How does the madly-in-love director adjust when he learns the truth about Rani? What happens to Raja’s parents’ mindset, and what becomes of Raja’s lover, Deepika? You’ll find answers to all these questions in the second half of the film.
Deepak Subramanya not only looks sweet, but he also has a “nose” for acting as Rani. He remains cool and composed in many scenes. He is an actor to watch in the coming days after delivering another splendid performance in Saaramsha.
Parvathi Nair is quite okay. Madhuchandra as an actor is not okay. The friend character in the film is very good, and the father character, played by Anand Ninasam, is convincing.
The songs in the film are not that appealing, but the background score is very good. The costumes for Deepak Subramanya and the hairstyle are impressive.
Ravindranath’s cinematography has lifted the film to a very good level. Mr Rani has many good elements handled beautifully, making it worth a watch.
