Over the years, many filmmakers have focused on their hometowns as inspiration for cinema. Now, another interesting personality from Mangaluru, Alok Durga Prasad, joins the list.
This young filmmaker, Alok Durgaprasad, is fulfilling his childhood dreams after a long struggle. As a child, he was a die-hard fan of Kichcha Sudeepa, while his mother admired Darshan. Their house reflected this divide, with photos of the two top stars on opposite walls of his room. One day, Sudeepa’s photo fell, and Alok, convinced his mother had done it intentionally, ran away from home. He even wanted to work as a sweeper in Sudeepa’s house to stay close to his idol. However, as he matured, he charted his own path and remained steadfast in his dream of making a film.
When Alok began the project, he envisioned it as a small-budget film. However, with the support and encouragement he received, the project grew into a ₹1 crore budget film. Several friends rallied behind him, recognizing his talent and unique vision. He chose young talent for the cast and spent eight months bringing his vision to life.
For the title, he wanted to honor his roots. Since Mangaluru is also known as “Kudla,” he named the film Kudla Namdu Ooru (meaning “Kudla, Our Town”). Post-COVID, progress accelerated, with nearly 200 new talents contributing to the project.
Kudla Namdu Ooru showcases the lives of kids in the 90s, blended with commercial elements. An MSc graduate in interior design, Alok Durgaprasad infused the film with his insights, ensuring it appealed to diverse audiences. While the film could have been made in Tulu, he chose Kannada to reach a broader audience. He also incorporated aspects of Kangilu culture into the narrative. The film is slated for release in January 2025. The cast includes Ramesh Davanagere, Shreya Shetty, Prakash Tumminadu, and others.
Ramesh Davanagere shared an emotional anecdote about Alok’s dedication. On one occasion, when Alok couldn’t meet expenses, he sold his mother’s mangalsutra to make payments. Ramesh, a close friend of Alok, described this as a testament to Alok’s commitment to his dream. Shreya Shetty plays a sister role in the film.
The teaser of Kudla Namdu Ooru was released by Kannada Film Producers Association President Umesh Banakar and Kannada Film Directors Association President NRK Vishwanath. Both praised the energy and potential of the team behind the film.
The film is produced under the Krutartha Productions banner, with Arya DK handling direction. The cast includes Ramesh, Anika Shetty, Swaraj Shetty, and others. Besides playing the lead role, Alok Durgaprasad is also a producer, alongside Chitra Gowda, Ankitha Padma, and Narendra Jain. Additionally, Alok worked in the direction department with Arya DK.
