Renowned family-friendly filmmaker Jayathirtha has undergone a significant transformation with ‘Kaiva,’ released on Friday, December 8, 2023. In ‘Paakigala Lokadalli,’ a previously untold narrative, Jayathirtha has approached the story with daring boldness.
Unexpectedly, the film portrays bizarre killings, particularly the brutal murders of Pakali (linked to adulteration), Thambu (associated with flesh trade), and Kaleem (connected to Timber Matka). The audience is compelled to close their eyes as the protagonist Kaiva seeks revenge, using various weapons. The trio of troublemakers subjects Kaiva’s fiancé Dumb to rape and pours acid on her neck when they lose control of their minds.
Director Jayathirtha, known for films like Olave Mandhara, Bell Bottom, and Banaras, has taken a plunge into commercial cinema with excess boldness.
While such weapons and killings may occur in real life, a careful approach was necessary when depicting them on the silver screen through mass media. Although the regional censor board awarded an ‘A’ certificate, the director bears greater responsibilities.
Apart from the gruesome killings, ‘Kaiva’ excels in evoking various emotions. Set against the backdrop of 1983, director Jayathirtha weaves a unique tale for his 138-minute and 27-second film, drawing inspiration from a mortuary attendant.
Jayathirtha’s intelligence is evident in how he frames situations, intertwining events like the 1983 Sept 12 Gangaram Building crash, the screening of Dr. Rajakumar’s film ‘Bhakta Prahallada,’ and the trio’s attack on Don Govindanna. The film references real-life underworld figures like Jayaraj and Kotwal, renaming them Ram Lal and Don Devaraj, respectively.
The love story interwoven with underworld chaos is well-executed, but the narrative takes a dark turn with the rape and acid attack. The climax unfolds as the police corner Kaiva during the religious ‘Karaga’ festival, with support from Govindanna.
In his third film, Dhanveerah delivers a stellar performance, leveraging his robust build for the role of Kaiva. Megha Shetty impresses as Salma, portraying her role effectively without dialogue.
The supporting cast, including Nandakumar, Ugram Manju, and Raghu Shimoga, excels in their roles. However, Dinakar Toogudeepa and JK – Jayaram Karthik steal the show in character roles, portraying real-life dons Kotwal Ramachandra and Jayaraj with superb voices, looks, and impactful dialogues.
The technical aspects, including Shwethapriya’s cinematography capturing the 80s era and outstanding costume design, contribute to the film’s appeal. The background score and songs by music director Ajaneesh Lokanath enhance the overall experience.
‘Kaiva’ stands out as a bold venture, with first-time producers from Abhuvanasa Creations, particularly Ravindra Kumar, showcasing courage in bringing such untold tales to the silver screen.
For enthusiasts of action and the underworld genre, ‘Kaiva’ promises to be a thrilling cinematic experience.
