One of South India’s legendary music directors, Devaa (Devanesan Chokkalingam), breathed his last on October 17. He would have turned 76 in November this year.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Devaa earned immense recognition and accolades for his musical contributions to the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film industries. Beginning with Manasuketha Maharaja in 1989, he went on to compose music for over 400 films, leaving behind a rich and enduring musical legacy.

For Kannada audiences, who can ever forget the evergreen melodies of Amrutha Varshini? Produced by Jayasri Devi and directed by Dinesh Baboo, the film featured Suhasini, Ramesh Aravind, Nivedhita Jain and Sharat Babu. Devaa’s memorable compositions beautifully complemented by the lyrics of K. Kalyan and brought to life by the legendary voices of Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. S. Chithra, turned every song into a super hit. Even today, the songs of Amrutha Varshini remain firm favorites at musical programs, a testament to their timeless appeal.

Devaa also made significant musical contributions to several films starring the legendary Dr. Vishnuvardhan, further strengthening his bond with Kannada cinema.

His impressive list of Kannada films includes Raaja, King, Galate Aliyandru, Simhadriya Simha, Kotigobba, Kadamba, Independence Day, Vande Mataram, 123, Naanu Naane, Sainika, Raja Narasimha, Vishnu Sene, Akasha Gange, Olave Mandara, Bheeshma and Bombaat Car, among many others.

Devaa’s music transcended languages and generations, touching countless hearts through its melodies. Though the maestro is no longer with us, his compositions will continue to live on, bringing joy, nostalgia and emotion to music lovers for years to come.

Music never dies, and neither will the melodies of Devaa.

May his soul rest in peace. A heartfelt tribute and a big salute to the legendary composer!
