In the tumultuous landscape of the Kannada cinema industry, 2023 witnessed a challenging phase, with only 15 out of 220 films managing to make a mark at the box office. The film backlog was swiftly cleared, often with just one screening per show.

The year concluded on a hopeful note with the release of ‘Kaatera,’ featuring the formidable Darshan. However, the majority of films struggled to draw audiences to theaters.

Among the 220-plus films, approximately 180 introduced new talent. Noteworthy successes included films like ‘Orchestra Mysuru,’ ‘Dare Devil Mustafa,’ ‘Achar and Co,’ and ‘Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddaare,’ which resonated well with audiences. A handful of other Kannada films endured a challenging journey but achieved a 50-day milestone.

Undoubtedly, the star of the year was Darshan, with ‘Kranthi’ proving profitable for producers, and ‘Garadi’ making a notable special appearance and ‘Kaatera’ have remained extremely good. Ganesh, Darling Krishna, and Prajwal Devaraj’s films fared reasonably well, thanks to the security provided by OTT rights.

The much-anticipated multi-starrer ‘Kabzaa’ brought financial gains to its producers but struggled for audience acceptance. Similarly, ‘Ghost’ generated significant buzz but failed to maintain a prolonged presence. Director MG Srinivas gained acclaim, and producer Sandesh Nagaraj saw some profits. Rakshit Shetty’s ‘Saptha Sagaradaache Side A and B’ collectively ensured positive results and received immense appreciation.

Surprises emerged from newcomers like ‘Dare Devil Mustafa,’ ‘Achar and Co,’ ‘Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddaare,’ and ‘Tagaru Palya,’ finding success both in theaters and on the OTT platform.

‘Ramesh Aravind’s ‘Shivaji Surathkal 2’ and ‘Raghavendra Stores’ by Jaggesh performed well at the box office. ‘Fighter’ brought fairness for Vinod Prabhakar and the producer. However, Abhishek Ambarish’s ‘Bad Manners’ under Suri’s directorial fell short of expectations.

‘Raj B Shetty’s ‘Toby’ received mixed reviews and couldn’t meet to box office expectations, whereas ‘Swathi Muttina Male Haniye’ garnered critical acclaim and attention across all business platforms. Films featuring Prajwal, Diganth, Vijaya Raghavendra, Komal Kumar, and others struggled to make an impact.

The notable Kannada films of 2023 include ‘Orchestra Mysuru,’ ‘Viratapura Viraagi’ (sold 75,000 tickets before release), ‘Kranthi,’ ‘19.20.21,’ ‘Kabzaa,’ ‘Gurudev Hoysala,’ ‘Raghavendra Stores,’ ‘Dare Devil Mustafa,’ ‘Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddaare,’ ‘Achar and Co,’ ‘Kausalya Supraja Rama,’ ‘Namo Boothatma 2,’ ‘Saptha Sagaradache Ello Side A and B,’ ‘Fighter,’ ‘Baanadaariyalli,’ ‘Ghost,’ ‘Tagaru Palya,’ ‘Garadi,’ ‘Bad Manners,’ ‘Swathi Muttina Male Haniye,’ ‘Kaiva,’ and ‘Kaatera.’
